The Alliance for the Low-Income & First-Generation Narrative (AL1GN) is a student conference series and coalition dedicated to empowering and connecting low-income and first-generation students.

AL1GN began in 2015 as a coalition of first-generation and low-income (FGLI) students and the staff who support them, growing in the course of three years to now include hundreds of students, staff, faculty, and administrators from dozens of schools and organizations across the United States.

AL1GN seeks to provide a forum on which FGLI students can take control of their own diverse narratives while working together with faculty and staff to spark new and revamped programming at their home institutions. Over the course of a weekend, participants will exchange ideas, create new relationships with fellow student leaders and concerned staff, and develop the foundation on which impactful work can occur. Our policy is that housing for students will be provided, and admission and meals are free for all attendees.

The 2019 Conference seeks to unite 250+ FGLI students and their allies from March 22-24 at the University of Virginia. We will address a persistent issue that haunts many FGLI students: educational insecurity. Attrition for FGLI students is staggeringly, and unnecessarily, high. We must bring to light this issue for everyone involved: students, faculty, administrators, and community members.
